In rural Rwanda, many families living in extreme poverty rely on unsafe and costly lighting such as candles and kerosene lamps, putting their health and safety at risk. Women, children, and the elderly are the most affected.
In 2025, NPO-TER, through the Shine on Rwanda Initiative, distributed 2,060 solar lights to vulnerable households in Gisagara and Gicumbi. For families surviving on just USD 2.72 per week, this support replaced danger with safety and uncertainty with stability.
The solar lights improved night-time safety, supported healthier living, and reduced household expenses. More importantly, they restored dignity and peace of mind.
This initiative proves that even a small source of light can create meaningful change—strengthening families and illuminating a brighter future for rural Rwanda.
