The Peace Event & Concert is more than just an annual gathering—it is a living, breathing movement that continues to inspire communities around the world. At its heart is a story of unimaginable loss transformed into powerful purpose. The event was born from the vision of Marie Louise Kambenga, a survivor of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. After enduring such profound trauma, Marie Louise rebuilt her life in an entirely new context—Fukushima, Japan—where she once again faced tragedy following the devastating 2011 tsunami.

But from these moments of darkness, she chose light.

In 2000, Marie Louise founded NPO TER (Think About Education in Rwanda) with a clear and unwavering mission: to foster peace by promoting education and understanding between cultures, rooted in the power of shared histories. What began as a small initiative has since grown into a transformative platform, harnessing the voices and leadership of youth to heal and unite.

For over a decade, the Peace Event & Concert has stood as a symbol of solidarity between Rwanda and Japan. It brings together young people, educators, artists, and peacebuilders to reflect, learn, and celebrate the strength found in unity. Through music, storytelling, and dialogue, the event has helped nurture a generation committed to peace and mutual respect.

And now, the circle of peace is expanding.

In 2025, this unique cultural and educational exchange will extend beyond Rwanda and Japan, welcoming youth and partners from Kenya, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This expansion marks a new chapter—one that embraces a broader Pan-African and international community of young peacebuilders, educators, and advocates.

As we move forward, the Peace Event & Concert continues to be a reminder that even from the greatest challenges, beauty and connection can emerge. Through education, remembrance, and youth leadership, we are building bridges that cross continents and generations—fueled by the unwavering belief that peace is possible, and it begins with us.
