introduction
The student exchange program between Josai International University (JIU) in Japan and the University of Rwanda (UR) took place from August 7 to September 6, 2024. This program was designed to foster intercultural understanding, academic collaboration, and social engagement between students from both universities. Over the course of a month, participants engaged in presentations, field visits, cultural experiences, and discussions that deepened their understanding of each other’s societies, histories, and healthcare systems.
Exploring History and Culture
A core part of the program involved students from both universities presenting on their respective histories and cultures. The UR students shared insights into Rwanda’s precolonial, colonial, and postcolonial history, while JIU students provided an overview of Japan’s historical milestones. Additionally, participants exchanged knowledge on cultural practices, including language, greetings, food, and traditional dances. This exchange highlighted the rich traditions and societal norms of both countries, enhancing appreciation and respect for diversity.
Healthcare Systems and Public Health Discussions
Students explored the healthcare systems of Rwanda and Japan, comparing their structures, professional requirements, and key public health programs. Topics such as immunization efforts, epidemic disease prevention, and the provision of essential drugs were discussed, allowing for a comparative understanding of how both countries manage healthcare challenges. Through these discussions, students gained valuable perspectives on global health strategies and best practices.
Insightful Guest Lectures
The program featured notable guest speakers, including Ambassador Charles Muligande, who emphasized the crucial role of women in Rwanda’s development. Ambassador Zephyr Mutangana also spoke about the long-standing partnership between Rwanda and Japan, encouraging future collaborations and exchanges. These lectures provided valuable political, historical, and diplomatic insights that enriched the participants' learning experience.
Immersive Field Visits
A highlight of the exchange program was the series of field visits that offered hands-on experiences and real-world insights. Participants visited:
NPOTE’s School Garden Project, where they learned about agricultural initiatives supporting school feeding programs.
Rwamagana Irrigation Program, which showcased irrigation techniques supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
JICA Rwanda Office, to understand the impact of Japan’s development projects in Rwanda.
Kigali Genocide Memorial, where students attended a peace seminar and reflected on the importance of peace-building, drawing parallels with Japan’s history of conflict and reconciliation.
Hospitals and Healthcare Centers, including visits to Nyamata Hospital, Mibirizi Hospital, Rwamagana Hospital, and CHUK, where students observed Rwanda’s healthcare system in action.
Cultural and Social Engagements
Beyond academics and field visits, the exchange program provided opportunities for cultural immersion. Students participated in traditional cooking sessions, shared meals, and engaged in music and dance performances. Attending a Rwandan traditional wedding and experiencing Japan’s cultural expressions deepened mutual appreciation. Additionally, Japanese students took part in Umuganda, Rwanda’s national community service day, contributing to local cleanliness initiatives and strengthening their connection with the community.
Overcoming Challenges
One of the main challenges faced during the program was the language barrier. While UR students were proficient in English, many Japanese students were not. This was resolved by having a bilingual Japanese student act as a translator, ensuring smooth communication and interaction throughout the program.
Conclusion
The JIU-UR student exchange program was a resounding success, fostering deep intercultural understanding, knowledge-sharing, and meaningful connections. The experience enriched students both academically and personally, broadening their worldviews and encouraging future collaborations. Programs like these are essential in bridging cultural divides, promoting global citizenship, and creating lasting friendships across borders.
As NPO TER, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to the University of Rwanda for their support and collaboration in making this exchange program a memorable and impactful experience for all participants.
