Bringing Clean Water to MIYOVE

Did you know that according to the World Health Organization, one in four people globally lacks access to safely managed drinking water? While significant progress has been made in Rwanda, many rural communities still rely on unsafe sources like rainwater, surface water, or poorly treated tap water. This reality puts families at constant risk of waterborne diseases, impacting not only health but education, productivity, and overall well-being.

At NPO-TER, we are committed to changing this narrative — one community at a time. In partnership with Global Access 2030 (GA2030), we’ve recently taken a major step forward in improving access to clean water for families in MIYOVE Sector.

GA2030, based in Colorado, USA, is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that communities around the world have access to safe and affordable drinking water. From February 27 to 28, 2025, their team — led by CEO Rob Miller and board members John Keith and Leah Weinkle — joined us in Rwanda to kick-start water filter distribution in MIYOVE.

On February 27th, NPO TER hosted a workshop at their office in Kimironko, bringing together NPO TER staff, GA2030 team members, and partners from Move Up Global in Musanze. The workshop focused on practical skills: How to assemble water filters (using two buckets, a filter cartridge, tubing, and sealing tape) as well as Proper filter maintenance to extend lifespan (with filters lasting up to 5 years if well maintained)

These filters are simple yet powerful tools to transform unsafe water sources into clean drinking water for families, schools, and health centers.

On February 28th, NPO TER traveled with the GA2030 team to the MIYOVE sector, where 27 families received water filters. Each household participated in a practical demonstration of using and caring for the filters. The excitement and gratitude from the community were palpable.

The Executive Secretary of MIYOVE addressed the gathering, expressing heartfelt thanks to GA2030 and NPO-TER for this life-changing initiative. He also highlighted how access to clean water will drastically reduce waterborne diseases in the area.

After the distribution, the GA2030 team visited some beneficiaries' families to witness firsthand the difference this project will make in their daily lives. They also toured other NPO-TER projects in the community, including greenhouse and sustainable agriculture initiatives that improve food security and health outcomes.

This water filter distribution in MIYOVE is just the beginning. NPO TER's joint vision with GA2030 is to scale this project to reach more communities, schools, and health centers throughout Rwanda — empowering families with one of life’s most essential needs: safe, clean water.
