Introduction

In an effort to improve children's health and well-being in Rwanda, a medical checkup initiative was launched in partnership with AMDA and NPO-TER. This project aims to assess and monitor the health status of school children, ensuring early detection and treatment of medical conditions. The initiative began in rural areas, with a focus on Kibirizi District, one of Rwanda’s most impoverished regions, providing a crucial sample for health assessments.

Successful Collaboration and Execution

The checkup was made possible with the support of Kibirizi District Hospital’s administration, which facilitated access to nearby schools and provided medical staff and resources. Their cooperation ensured that any urgent medical issues discovered during the checkups could be addressed promptly.

On October 22, 2024, a dedicated team comprising Dr. Honore, Dr. Safina, Solange RN, and Patrick RN conducted a medical checkup at Kibirizi Group Scolaire. A total of 452 students underwent health screenings, marking a significant step toward fostering a culture of proactive healthcare among young students.

Health Conditions Identified

Although a comprehensive report will be compiled after additional screenings at Ikirezi Primary School and Umuco Mwiza Primary School, some prevalent health issues were identified in the first phase, including:

  • Malnutrition cases – Highlighting the need for improved nutrition programs.

  • Bilateral and Unilateral Orchidopexy cases (Undescended Testes) – A condition requiring medical intervention.

  • Poor hygiene cases – Emphasizing the importance of hygiene education.

  • Multiple Tinea Capitis cases – A fungal scalp infection commonly seen in children.

  • Dental hygiene issues and cavities – Indicating the necessity for oral health awareness and treatment.

Impact and Future Prospects

This medical checkup project is set to continue throughout the academic year, reinforcing the importance of routine health assessments even in the absence of visible symptoms. By normalizing regular health screenings, the initiative aims to build a healthier generation of young scholars who are aware of and proactive about their well-being.

With continued support and collaboration, this program has the potential to significantly improve child healthcare in Rwanda, ensuring a healthier future for all.
